Teaching Idea
What evidence of everyday life since 1948 can we find in a photograph?This photograph from the 1960s could be used as part of pupils work on the past, present and future of shopping. Ask pupils where their family go to do their food shopping? Then ask, if they think this small shop sold most things that people needed? Explain how people used to shop by going to the butchers, bakers, grocers etc. You make like to use the Images by Theme - Past Shopping to aid this discussion
Ask pupils to speak to their parents/grandparents about what shopping in the past was like and record their answers. This could then lead to a discussion about supermarkets and how we shop today. Prompt the pupils to think about what has changed and how this has affected the way we shop. This could be broken down into categories such as:
Cars - how has the car influenced the way we shop?
Refridgeration - how have changes in the way we store food altered the way we shop?
Aeroplanes - how have improved transport links changed the way we shop?
Women at work - how have changes in employment changed the way we shop?
TV - how has TV advertising altered the way we shop?
These categories could also be used to prompt some of the questions that they ask their parents/grandparents. Their findings could be presented as a piece of structured narrative.

- As part of their citizenship work students could also consider the social impacts of the changes in shopping. In the 1960s you would have spoken to the butcher, baker etc on your shopping trip, compared to just pushing a trolley around a supermarket. Do you think that doesn't matter because people now speak to each other using mobile phones and the internet?
- Pupils could also consider the effects that supermarkets and out-of-town retail parks have had on towns and their high streets.
