2nd Phase - Timber, Stonehenge, Wiltshire
click to return to image details
This is a reconstruction drawing of the second phase of Stonehenge. It is known as the timber phase. Many holes were dug within the circular earthwork and wooden posts were put in them. It is also when Stonehenge became a place of burial. Several deposits of cremated (burnt) human bone were found during excavations. There are no exact Radiocarbon dates for this phase. Archaeologists believe it was built between 2900-2600BC. That makes it around 4,700 years old. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
